NINE GROUPS RECEIVE $20,000 EACH FROM DRA

Grant recipients announced

The Dubuque Racing Association announced the annual distributions of grants to tri-state area organizations on Tuesday, allocations that totaled $1.43 million.

The DRA board unanimously approved the grant distributions at its monthly meeting.

This is the first time in recent years the grant distributions have been based on operating results of the Mystique and Diamond Jo casinos instead of a previously established fund. A casino leader said he believes the amount distributed this year is a sign that the gambling industry is thriving in Dubuque. Both area casinos are required by contract to give a certain percentage of their profits to the DRA, which is the license-holder for Mystique Casino and Dubuque Greyhound Park and the co-license-holder for the Diamond Jo.

Nine groups received a maximum grant amount of $20,000 from the Dubuque Racing Association, according to a list of grant recipients released Tuesday.

Camp Courageous of Iowa, the city of Cascade, Dubuque Main Street Ltd., Hillcrest Family Services, Hills and Dales Child Development Center, Honor Flight of Greater Dubuque, Read To Me Foundation, Special Olympics Iowa and Stonehill Benevolent Foundation were the organizations receiving the top grants.

Jesus Aviles, president and CEO, said this year's distribution level is a sign of good things to come. "That this year, in a very tight year, we were able to distribute ($1.43 million in charitable donations) gives us a lot of hope for the future of Dubuque as a gaming destination," he said.

This year was the first year the grant applications were received through a software program, a process DRA officials said went well overall.

Read To Me Foundation thanks Brian Southwood/Mystique VP and Jesus Aviles, President/CEO Mystique Casino for the DRA Grant Award of $20,000 to Read To Me Foundation, to help support the "Operation Got Your Back" military children's book, and patriotic events at the Mystique Casino Cabaret Showroom and the Mystique Ice Arena. Both events will be a salute to our American Soldiers, Families and Children. A thank you to our military children and families during the stressful deployment separations.
